Due to its proximity of the transit hub which is the J, M, Z, Subway LIne and the Williamsburg Southside shopping area, there is a large pedestrian presence on Havemeyer Street. Traffic exiting the Williamsburg Bridge uses Havemeyer Street as a high speed thorough fare en route to the east bound Brooklyn Queens Expressway. Motorists drive at high rates of speed upon exiting the Williamsburg Bridge onto Havemeyer Street, which north of S.4th Street is a densely populated and narrow street. Motorists routinely drive at speeds over 40 M.P.H. when traveling on the residential and commercial shopping stretch of Havemeyer Street North of the Williamsburg Bridge, putting students, residents and visitors to the area at risk everyday. The installation of Speed Bumps on the block north of S.4th Street and the block north of S.2nd Street would slow down the speed of motorists using the narrow and populous Havemeyer Street as a highway.
