I’m signing because too often individuals with mental illness become the victim of police violence due lack of empathy from LEO or just plain ignorance

My son Paul Tarashuk has a mental illness and was killed by police all on body cam if you google it. We have a petition and I was checking it and found this. This is one of the changes I want to make to protect people like my son. 1 in 5 people have some form of mental illness and are 16 times more likely to die if the police come. We need to stop that. Cops don’t want these calls and families don’t want to have to call them for help out of fear for our loved ones. And yet we have no one else to call. Please let’s get this pushed through in NY and then maybe we can take it to a national level.
God Bless

They are not properly trained or enforced, and they are not equipped to do their job, which is to PROTECT the PEOPLE.

Police should not deal with people of this illness. They are not skilled to deal with them and need real physicians to help them when in need. Not police and not violence.

One solution does not fit all. Humans needs must be understood and cared for.
