Reinstate Nordstrom Park!!!
0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,000!
March 6th, 2017, the Nordstrom Family was promised that a children's park within the Willow Glen development would be named in honour of Robert (Bob) Nordstrom for his community contributions, but more so for his work that lead to the development itself. Mr. Nordstrom had purchased the land in 1988, on which the subdivision currently sits, and his intent was to develop it himself. Unfortunately, he was killed in a car accident on Tottenham Rd. in 1990. However, before his death he had single handedly brought the whole project to draft plan.
While the park was nearing completion, and the Nordstrom family waited for news about the park opening ceremony, a resident opposed the name. This person was a relative of the family. This person's intent was to create enough conflict around the park that Council was scared off and needed a way out.
On November 13th, 2017.....8 months after being promised the already approved park, the name was rescinded by Council due to not following policy. Policy is to name parks after the street on which it is on. Only Councillors Beattie and Norcross stayed true to their word.
The Town Council was fully aware of this policy when the park was approved back in March, but apparently it became a problem in November.
There have been instances when parks have been named after people, Jim Milligan Park, Geoff S. Gaston Sports Park and Joan Sutherland Park to name a few. In fact, it was current Deputy Mayor Jebb's suggestion to name the park after Jim Milligan. What about policy?
There is no doubt that these people deserve the recognition they received, but why was it ok to not follow policy with them? What makes them any more important than Mr. Nordstrom?
If you feel that there has been a great injustice, and that their decision should be overturned, please sign the petition, and provide Council with your thoughts about this issue.
