Ending the use of Roundup by the New Plymouth District Council

We call for the  NPDC (New Plymouth district Council, in the Taranaki Region, New Zealand/Aotearoa) to investigate ceasing the use of Roundup herbicide and other chemical means of weed control  in all public reserves, parks and verges until they are proven safe and non toxic.

We would encourage a transition to using alternate products ( like Bio weed and steam weeding) in concert with the Councils existing use of mulches.

There is no protection from stopping people  (especially children) and pets and other animals from having direct contact with newly sprayed areas. That verges and edges in play areas and sports grounds are treated with these chemicals is concerning.

Although there is strong anecdotal evidence of the dangers these sprays pose (especially if the recommended safety cautions are not followed by those applying the sprays), unfortunately there is very little scientific consensus on the dangers posed by the sprays. This is mostly due to a lack of solid research on the toxicity of the  sprays because Chemical Companies are not compelled to disclose all of the components in their products ( i.e. Monsanto's  Roundup and  Syngenta's Touchdown).

This creates a real difficulty in ascertaining which components in these chemical sprays are of greatest concern to health. Public concern is mostly focussed on the  effect of  glycophosphate/glycophosate and bisphenol A on health, ( with the suspected link between non-Hodkin's lymphoma and a proven association with myeloid leukemia). The fact  that the  surfactants and other chemicals contained in these products may pose an even greater threat to health is of equal concern.

Vanessa  Fitsanakis (a neurotoxicologist at Northeast Medicala University whos research is funded by Americas National Institute of Health)  says "...you can have an active ingredient that is non-toxic, but that does not mean that the commercial formulation is also non toxic".

In the face of growing evidence that un natural combinations of chemicals pose health threats to humans and other flora and fauna in the wider environment, we call for the cessation of non-natural chemical management where an alternative exists.
