PROPOSAL FOR 2023 PUBLIC WORKS BUDGET

Proposal: 6 New Pickleball Courts in Quinte West (Trenton Ward) 120’ x 120’ fenced area with windscreens to protect the courts from the weather and the noise for neighbouring homes.

Preferred Location: Hanna Park Centrally located Protected from wind Ample parking, Pairs well with the tennis courts that are already there, Close to schools

Rationale: Fastest growing sport in Canada (75,000 in 2019 to 350,000 in 2021 according to Pickleball Canada) https://pickleballcanada.org/

Accommodate the growing number of players in our community. Very social, family oriented sport Inclusive (social, family oriented, all genders and ages, all levels of play, inexpensive to play) Although there are lines for pickleball on the existing tennis courts this is not ideal especially for new players because the multiple lines confuses game play and the net heights are different.

Stay competitive with neighbouring communities {Brighton and Belleville have recognized the growing sport and have addressed the needs of their communities {(11 new pickleball courts in Belleville), ($125,000 pickleball complex being constructed in Brighton)}

Increase health and fitness rates, Increase outdoor recreation opportunities, Opportunity to partner with schools for additional exposure to the sport and use of the facilities

Additional Information: We are in the process of compiling a list of interested people to create a pickleball community in Quinte West that would expand the sport and would ensure courts are utilized to their full potential

National Championships being held in Kingston summer 2022

There was a request made last year by Frank Payeur, but the budget was already set; we are hopeful this proposal will get serious consideration for the 2023 budget year
