STOP RTA PLAN TO CLOSE CANAL STREET INTERSECTIONS
AND ELIMINATE LOCAL STREETCAR STOPS

We, the undersigned homeowners, residents and business owners of the Greater New Orleans area, OPPOSE the RTA plan to close 20 street intersections and eliminate 18  streetcar stops on Canal Street between Carrollton and Claiborne in a 6-month “pilot” starting May/June, 2019:

  • CONCRETE BARRIERS will prohibit crossings at 80% of Canal St. intersections between Carrollton and Claiborne.
    NO LEFT TURNS ALLOWED.
  • CUTTING 18 LOCAL STREETCAR STOPS will severely impact local/neighborhood riders.  90% of Riders on the Canal Streetcar are New Orleanians. Stops for Warren Easton, RTA and the Hurricane Evacustop are to be eliminated. Riders, including the elderly and mobility impaired, will have to walk longer distances to catch the streetcar, including late at night.
  • STREET CROSSING CLOSURES WILL SEVERELY LIMIT ACCESS FOR FIRE, POLICE AND EMS, causing potential life-threatening delays. There has been NO STUDY of impact on public safety.
  • NO TRAFFIC STUDY has been done on the impact of closing 20 street intersections. Traffic will be a nightmare.
  • NO STUDY of ECONOMIC DAMAGE TO MID-CITY BUSINESSES by limiting access – similar to the catastrophic impact on Tulane Avenue in the past.
  • LACK OF TRANSPARENCY AND INPUT: Residents, homeowners, businesses and neighborhood associations in Mid City and Lower Mid City were LEFT OUT from the study.
  • NO CONSIDERATION OF REASONABLE ALTERNATIVES such as adding express buses at peak hours, kiosks at stops to collect fares, adding traffic signals for approaching streetcars at intersections, etc.
  • WE SUPPORT SAFE, RELIABLE, EFFICIENT, ACCESSIBLE, AND EQUITABLE PUBLIC TRANSIT.  This deeply flawed plan destroys the Mid City street grid, takes away local/neighborhood access to public transit, and barricades Mid City and Lower Mid City while it does nothing to address the URGENT need for reliable and efficient EXPRESS BUS SERVICE DURING PEAK HOURS for workers and commuters.

Please sign this petition, urging Mayor LaToya Cantrell, New Orleans City Councilmembers and the RTA to Stop the Canal Streetcar “pilot”, insist upon meaningful participation from impacted neighborhoods and businesses as well as a professional and comprehensive study of public transit needs on Canal St., local and express, before any pilot takes place.
