Dalia, a 4 year old Great Dane, was diagnosed with two autoimmune conditions within the last 2 years; Immune Mediated Polyarthritis and Addison's disease. Dalia's veterinarian strongly believes that further rabies vaccinations will pose a serious risk to her health.
Vaccine manufactures as well as the USDA recommend that vaccines are only given to healthy dogs and cats. Regardless, New Mexico's existing rabies law requires for all animals to be vaccinated in spite of any medical condition they might have. Our state does not have any statues or regulations in place that would allow for ill animals to be exempt from rabies vaccinations.
The New Mexico Rabies Medical Exemption Bill aims to create waivers for animals that are too sick to receive another rabies vaccine. A waiver provided by a licensed veterinarian would exempt animals with medical conditions from further rabies vaccinations. Such conditions include but are not limited to infectious diseases, immune mediated conditions, cancer, kidney and liver failure.
Help us protect sick animals like Dalia by signing the following letter urging New Mexico legislators to introduce a Rabies Medical Exemption Bill.
