One of the current eligibility requirements for the New Mexico lottery scholarship is 15 credit hours for you're first semester at a University and 12 credited hours at a two year community college. The change I am asking for is to lower the summer semester only at the University level to 12 credited hours. In order to take 15 credit hours during a summer semester at any University, there are requirements to be met. A petition for overload is submitted and the student must have a 3.0 GPA. In my case, I had no previous GPA. I am 43 and just received my GED Taking 15 credited hours was not an option for me. I did not want to wait till fall semester, so I did 12 and ended the summer semester with a 3.25 GPA.In the fall I took 15 credit and ended with a 3.8 GPA. I am currently taking 18 credit hours. Every semester I am using student loan money to cover the tuition that my Pell Grant does not cover. The Higher Education Act of 1965 states the full time for a summer semester is 6 credited hours. According to the VA.gov,education.com the United States Federal Government also recognizes 6 credit hours full time for a summer semester. I am asking New Mexico State to lower the 15 credit hours for summer semesters.
