Why this petition matters

Started by Katie Mclain

Over the last year the Wifi in the Mineral Science and Engineering Complex building on New Mexico Tech's campus has been rapidly deteriorating. Dozens of graduate students and faculty have requested help from ITC, with no real solutions being offered in return. When working in the building on the wifi you can expect to lose internet connection anywhere from one to ten times a day, for a time range of a few seconds to an hour or more. Most recently, we were told to just not use the wifi... and to stay disconnected unless we absolutely need it. We were also told to stop using microwaves and do any large downloads at home. For reference Socorro has one internet provider, and we have a speed of about 10-12 megabits per second, which means large files take hours to download. In the face of the pandemic, internet access is vital, and over the past year there has certainly been an increase in usage of the Wifi, which is out of our control. Several graduate students, myself included will schedule an extra ten to fifteen minutes into our zoom meeting just to account for the several times we know we will be dropped from the internet and to deal with the many "I'm sorry you cut out on me can you repeat that" statements. While this seems more like an inconvenience than anything, it is slowly becoming detrimental to several students research. If possible we would all be using an ethernet cable to connect to the internet, but several offices do not have a working port, and ITC charges every semester to connect. As graduate students typically fall below the poverty line, and already pay for mediocre internet access at home, you can understand why not many people opt for this. Unfortunately MSEC seems to be the only building on campus experiencing these issues and ITC does not seem to be very concerned with addressing them. By signing this petition you stand with us asking NMT to provide more diverse, cost free options for internet usage in the building!
