Why this petition matters
Support a Bill to Ban the Sale of Puppy Mill Dogs in New Jersey!
S.63/ A.2338 would not only ban the sale of puppy mill dogs in New Jersey, but will also protect consumers and support responsible local breeders.
Pet store customers should no longer be duped into supporting the cruel puppy mill industry and into buying puppies exposed to the unique set of physical and behavioral problems created by such a substandard upbringing.
The bill would prohibit the sale of dogs and cats unless the transaction is conducted in person. The legislation would also prohibit pet shops from selling dogs and cats from puppy mills and kitten mills, but would allow the sale of pets from animal shelters, pounds, kennels and animal rescue organizations. The measure effectively bans the sale of inhumane puppy and kitten mill animals in New Jersey, both over the internet and in pet shops. The bill establishes a penalty of $500 for each violation, in addition to other penalties that may be imposed pursuant to the state consumer fraud law.
"These puppy mills have gained a notorious reputation for putting profits ahead of the humane treatment of dogs and cats. Their mass breeding has created inbred health and behavioral problems and the inhumane conditions have left too many of these pets to suffer from neglect and mistreatment."- Senator Raymond J. Lesniak
Humane Society of the United States estimates that 10,000 puppy mills in the country produce as many as 2.4 million puppies each year for pet stores.
“The passage of this bill will ensure that New Jersey residents acquire pets from humane, honest sources, such as shelters, rescues and responsible breeders who already sell their puppies and kittens face-to-face.” - Kathleen Schatzmann, Senior State Director, The Humane Society of the United States
