The recent passage of A5342 by both the New Jersey Senate and New Jersey Assembly prohibits law enforcement from contacting the parents of a juvenile caught using marijuana or alcohol for their first offense. As a parent it is unconscionable that a 12, 13, 14, or 15 year old could be caught by local law enforcement using marijuana or alcohol and the law prohibits law enforcement from contacted the childs parents.

A5342 needs to be amended by both the New Jersey Senate and New Jersey Assembly to mandate law enforcement to notify the parents or legal guardian any time a juvenile is caught using marijuana or alcohol.

As parents we have seen our children's lives turned upside down the past 12 months. Many children are suffering and struggling with remote learning, extra curricular activities have been eliminated or drastically reduced, and the lack of social interaction with friends and family have driven a spike in addiction and mental health issues amongst children. As parents we need to be notified if our child is using marijuana or alcohol the very first time they are caught. Anything less is social injustice.
