Recess is a lot more than just a free break for kids to play after lunch period. That free, unstructured play time allows kids to exercise and helps them focus better when they are in class. Yet over the past 20 years, recess time has been reduced in effort to meet the increasing demands of today's rigorous academic classrooms. Recess serves as a necessary break from the rigors of concentrated, academic challenges in the classroom. But equally important is the fact that safe and well-supervised recess offers cognitive, social, emotional, and physical benefits that may not be fully appreciated when a decision is made to diminish it. Our children spend approximatley one third of their day at school. That is between seven to eight ours per day in the classroom learning. Sadly, of those seven to eight hours, only minutes are dedicated to recess and play time. Yes, minutes! On average students receive between 20 to 25 minutes per day decated to recess and play time. That is simply not enough. Our children need to the opportunity to be kids while developing socially and emotionally not just academically. It is time as parents we band together advocating for our children. We must demand more recess and play time during the school day. The future and well-being of our children depend on it.
