BJ Ayars started this petition to Governor Phil Murphy and

New Jersey Governor Murphy has included in his proposed budget for the upcoming year diverting 33 million dollars, intended to go to the New Jersey State Firemen’s Association, into the general coffers of the State.

This is not money paid by taxpayers.  This is not the Governor’s money to take.  This money is controlled by State Law.

These funds are received from a 2% fee charged to insurance companies who are based outside of New Jersey but provide fire insurance in the State of N.J.

These funds are provided to qualifying members of both the volunteer and career fire service as a burial benefit based on their number of years service.  The max for firefighters who earn 7 years of response at the required percentage is a little over $11,000.  (Their families are not getting rich).  Some families only have this benefit to bury their loved one.  (FYI the greatest majority of firefighters in N.J. are volunteers.  They often do not have pensions and many do not have life insurance.)

These funds are used to provide some minimal support under the strictest rules to firefighters who are ill and recuperating at home (or spending their last days at home).

These funds can provide limited support under strict rules to firefighters and/or their dependent survivors who have fallen on unexpected and hard times.  Their homes blew away in a disaster, cancer prevented them from working...are just a few examples.

This money funds the Firemen’s Home in Boonton that is home to firefighters needing nursing care or a safe place to live.

These funds support a single annual convention where thousands of delegates conduct the business of the association.  They honor those lost in the previous year.

These funds are tightly restricted.  They do not pay for parties.  They may not be used for supplies or frivolity. They are not mixed with the funds of local fire companies. What is in reserve is watched over by local associations and routinely audited by the NJSFA to assure it is safely guarded.

This petition is intended to provide the Governor and the NJ Lawmakers with true reflection of the response of the firefighters, the fire companies and the families of the 68,000 NJ firefighters who oppose this action.

The New Jersey State Firemen’s Association is comprised of 538 Local Firemen’s Relief Associations consisting of approximately 68,000 Career and Volunteer Firefighters.

Please sign your name and have your families sign their names to let our lawmakers know that we oppose this action.
