Reconsider decision to lower US flags in memory of Whitney Houston
Although Whitney Houston was born in New Jersey, lived for a time in Mendham during her popular years, and is being buried in New Jersey, I believe that a known user of illegal drugs and abuser of alcohol and prescription medicines, should not be honored by the lowering of the United States Flag to half mast.
The United States Flag Code states than in addition to traditional half-staff salutes proclaimed by the President, the Flag may be lowered to honor citizens who have died, especially government officials and prominent citizens.
However, instead of honoring Ms. Houston in this way, the Governor should lower the flags to half staff on the government buildings for each New Jersey soldier that has died while serving in the military. These are our true heroes.
