New Jersey Civil Service Commission: Recognize Veteran's Status for Civil Service Jobs at Any Time
Fairness in Hiring Practices for Veterans
- New Jersey Governor
Presently, the New Jersey Civil Service Commission recognizes the status of Veterans as eligible for Veterans Preference so long as this status is established 8 days prior to the certification of a hiring list. This means that, though some persons have honorably served their country as combat veterans, if they have not done so within a specified period of time, their service is not recognized. A veteran is a veteran, regardless of when their service was completed. Example: John Doe takes a civil service exam in 2010. The list is certified (published) in 2011. John Doe then deploys overseas in 2012. John Doe returns and is certified (considered) for a job, but does not receive veteran's preference for the job because his veteran status was not established "in time." Recognize veteran's status and establish preference for Civil Service Jobs at any time for veterans.
