Stephen Burnett started this petition to New Hanover County and Brunswick County Commissioners

Eagles Island is the island that the Battleship USS North Carolina has lived on since 1962.  The Battleship is a Memorial to the heroes who fought for our country.  Its an honored shrine that should not be flanked by commercial developments intruding on a space that is sacred to so many families and visitors.  The tasteful recreation and educational improvements that we believe are appropriate will complement the Battleship.

Eagles Island itself is approximately 7 miles long and 2 miles wide.  There are certain land developers from the western part of North Carolina who want to develop approximately 60 acres of land that they have purchased on Eagles Island which are directly across the Cape Fear River from downtown Wilmington and adjacent to Battleship Park.  Its our understanding that they want to build up to 1,000 apartments or condominiums which could rise up to 100 feet in the air or up to 10 stories tall.

We believe that the public will be much better served if we Preserve and Protect Eagles Island and make it an Educational and Recreational Destination for the citizens of North Carolina, and especially for New Hanover and Brunswick County citizens.  We have an opportunity to preserve Eagles Island in its natural state, protect the wildlife and make it an educational and recreational area for future generations.  We envision nature trails, bicycle paths, a bird pavillion, a boardwalk to Maritime Archaeology,  an overlook viewing the remnants of a 128' Civil War sidewheel steamship , sustainable design Interpretive Center, a boat and kayak ramp, an amphitheatre, a theatre, paddle trails, outdoor camping platforms, boardwalk along the Cape Fear River that mirrors downtown Wilmington, and other elements that will enhance the Island.

Please sign the Petition and help us Preserve Eagles Island.  STOP THE DEVELOPMENT!!!  THANK YOU!!!
