As of September 9, 2022, DeBakey HSHP implemented a new policy that "[prohibits] cell phones and other recreational devices...in the gym, library, and main building classrooms and hallways." Students feel strongly about this new policy because cell phones are an enormous part of everyday life and learning at the school. Although it is reasonable to ban cell phone use in the classroom, revoking the right to message our parents, listen to music while studying, and feel safe throughout the hours of 7:45 am to 3:25 pm everyday is unreasonable. DeBakey is an institution known for its excellent students who take responsibility for their learning. The choice between studying in the library or watching a youtube video to relax in the library should be left up to the student. 

In addition, the consequences of using your cell phone during school are absurd. Paying money to get my own device back? Having to wait a whole week to get it back? An hour of detention after school?

We, as the senior student body, are taking charge and trying to revise this policy. If you agree that this policy should be revised, and the student council should be consulted to any changes regarding this policy in the future, then please sign our petition!
