Earth Systems Science tells us we are in trouble. The issues are now being shared on TV, in social media and by the ordinary person and the famous...we must respond accordingly.

All governments and councils have a duty to cut, if not eliminate, the negative impacts of climate change.

It has already been proposed that NATC adopt an Environmental Policy as an example for the town, as a whole, to adopt. To declare a Climate Emergency would be the first step in making a responsive and proactive policy a reality.

Declaring a Climate Emergency would be a way to show that not only do personal decisions on climate change matter, but that community and political bodies can share the responsibility and bring about change through policies and legislation.

The people of Alresford, young and old, call upon  NATC

1. To declare a Climate Emergency.

2. Commit to making all Council activities carbon neutral by 2025.

3. Either by utilising the skills of an existing committee or, preferably, a specific working group chaired by a Councillor  to report back to Full Council within 6 months with a managed and timed action plan for achieving carbon neutrality by 2025.

4. Establish a Citizens' Forum to promote dialogue and generate ideas by involving participation from all groups, backgrounds and ages in the Town, including civil and commercial organisations.

5. Examine all Council investments and divest from fossil fuel companies.

6. Use an ethical procurement process to encourage all Council suppliers to declare a Climate Emergency for themselves.

7. Call on the support of Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council and surrounding Town and Parish Councils to declare a Climate Emergency and call for change at a national governmental level to reduce carbon emissions.
