With the continued spread of COVID-19 in the US, many universities, including the University of Cincinnati, have begun to implement a "hybrid" class structure for the 2020 Fall semester. This has resulted in many crucial courses switching to an online format. While we understand that the university is trying to offer the safest way for students to continue their education, charging full tuition for online classes is unfair, especially for out of state students who are charged significantly more per semester.

The overall effectiveness and quality of education of online classes are not the same as we receive when we are face to face with our instructors and peers. This change in course delivery particularly affects students with labs who don't have access to hands on materials, as well as students in DAAP and CCM whose education is based on being on campus in art studios and performing. These are all things that will not be available to many students this semester due to the hybrid structure.

Additionally, many students and their families have experienced financial strain over the past few months as employees are being laid off and businesses have closed. It is wrong for students to have to choose whether they can afford to enroll this semester because they are being charged full out-of state tuition for online classes during a pandemic. It is also in the best interest of the university to reduce the tuition in order to keep enrollment numbers up this semester, as many students may be forced to drop out due to the circumstances.

For the 2020 Summer term, the University of Cincinnati offered the Bearcats Everywhere Scholarship to out of state students which covered the non-resident fee of up to $7,767, and we request the same be considered for the Fall semester. We hope that President Pinto and the board understand our perspective on this and make the change.
