Furness Abbey Railway Station was closed on the 25th September 1950.
At the time it was a rural area and usage of the station was low. In the 67 years since then the population and usage of area has area has grown considerably.
The new railway station would be better sited if it was situated just to the South of the roundabout where Park Road joins Abbey Road.
The old station was sited to the South of Furness Abbey tunnel which at the time made sense as it's main users were passengers visiting Furness Abbey. The new station would also help takes cars off the road visiting Furness Abbey but would also serve many more uses.
Furness General Hospital staff and the housing estates in the Northern suburbs of Furness Abbey would be the main source of passengers using the new station. Barrow in Furness Sixth Form College and the Abbey House Hotel would also provide a reliable source of passengers for this new station.
By reopening Furness Abbey Railway Station traffic would be taken off the road encouraging both local residents, commuters and tourists to use the new facility.
