The 8 South African Horror movie is unoriginal and racist. The movie takes place during the 1970s on an unspecified farm inherited by a white man named Will from his late grandfather (who probably stole it in the first place). Apartheid was still in effect in 1970s South Africa so the backdrop setting is already specifically segregationist. Although the movie is about Lazarus (a black man cursed with collecting people's souls); he has very limited screen time compared to the white family he works for on this farm. Lazarus like the rest of the black talent on screen has tattered & stained clothes. The white family however has clean, well-fitting clothes with a scene of washed laundry being hung on the line for good measure. Additionally, white people are "innocent & oblivious to the "witch doctor dark magic" that the black people exclusively practice. A black girl is portrayed as an ugly, evil demon, a white girl is portrayed as kind, clean & pretty. This racist dichotomy plays into tired archaic media tropes of black people being innately violent and evil  "savages" and white people being the antithesis. Everybody involved in the creation of this film was white save the onscreen talent. Representation is important because it normalizes, hence the global call for diversity in entertainment. Transformative representation through inclusion should be consistent, on & offscreen to avoid the creation of such racist content. Netflix should have known better and done their research to see where exactly their investment went. Please sign the petition to get this message across.
