Barbara Burnette, A heroic NYPD detective, more than two decades after 9/11, paid the ultimate price for her work amidst the toxic ruins of the World Trade Center. Barbara Burnette, 58, of Queens, died Dec. 30 after a long and debilitating battle with health issues linked to her 23 daunting days in the burning Ground Zero rubble following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack that toppled the Twin Towers.

On June 11, 2015, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Director John Howard, Dr. Udasin, a principal investigator with the World Trade Centertwo former New York City police officers (Barbara Burnette and David Howley) with illnesses that resulted from working at the World Trade Center site in lower Manhattan testified at a hearing on the bill to reauthorize the World Trade Center Health Program and the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund and explain why the program was still needed. The bill was passed and thousands today are benefitting from zero cost health care for 9-11 related illnesses.
