In light of sexual harassment accusations made against actor Kevin Spacey, Netflix has chosen to suspend production on the series House of Cards "until further notice". Given any company's need to address potential problems in the wake of a scandal, this is an understandable move.
However, so far we have no reason to believe that Kevin Spacey's alleged behaviour, past or present, has intervened with the production of this series. Whatever allegations are made against cast or crew involved in any television production, motion picture and/or television companies cannot suspend the careers of the hundreds involved for the sake of their corporate image. Oppressing the creativity of actors and their colleagues on account of allegations made against one individual by cancelling a television series is no better than censorship. If we want to live in a world where we have the opportunity to see movies and tv series that allow for free speech, we ought to have the opportunity to choose whether or not to watch television series that include cast against whom accusations have been made. Cancelling a television series and intervening with the careers of many will not encourage more victims of sexual harassment to speak out. It will simply be a by-product of a media scandal. Television viewers - decide for yourselves to what extent you think that Hollywood should be the property of propaganda.
