Why this petition matters

Started by Mauri Konell

Now, during the most powerful civil rights movement of our generation, it is imperative that we use our voices and our gifts to elevate the voices of the oppressed, to eliminate racism and demand justice and equality.

I’m writing this on the 4th of July, a day we are told to celebrate freedom & independence, but it’s impossible until Black Lives Matter. The dream IS possible — but we all have to work together to unite and conquer the pervasive racism that has poisoned our country’s history and current culture.

Art is one of the highest, most vulnerable and most powerful ways we can assert our activism, educate, inspire, share the truth and bring people together.

The remarkable cast of Father Comes Home From The Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3), Sterling K. Brown, Desean Terry, Steven Bargonetti, Russell G. Jones, Sameerah Luqmaan-Harris, Michael McKean, Patrena Murray, Tonye Patano, Larry Powell, Roger Robinson, Julian Rozzell Jr., and Josh Wingate, illuminate Pulitzer Prize winner, Suzan-Lori Parks’ brilliant words and bring the story of “the struggle to hold on to who we are and what we love in a country that forces us to fight battles we didn’t choose for ourselves,” (Center Theatre Group).

“In this devastatingly beautiful new play set during the Civil War, a slave named Hero (played by Sterling K. Brown) is offered his freedom if he joins his master (Michael McKean) in the ranks of the Confederacy. The choice is to leave the woman and people he loves for what may be an empty promise. His decision brings him face to face not only with a nation at war with itself, but with what freedom truly means,” (Center Theatre Group).

This petition is to invite Netflix to offer the filmed performance of this incredible cast at The Mark Taper Forum in spring of 2016 on all streaming platforms.

The message of Father Comes Home is more timely and important than ever before, and people deserve to hear these words and messages brought to life. It would be a shame to keep this performance away from the public, a disservice to human rights.

Please, Netflix, help share these gifts and these voices and show the world that Black Lives Matter.
