Orangutans are highly intelligent animals. They are in the ape family, alongside gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, gibbons, and humans. They are the only Great Apes in Asia, and they are critically endangered.

The orangutans are going extinct, and one of the biggest reasons is because of the palm oil industry. Brands such as Nestlé, Christie, Kellogg's, and many, many more use unsustainable palm oil in their products. These include candy bars such as KitKat and Coffee Crisp, cookies such as Oreo and Chips Ahoy, and Eggo waffles, among many more products.

The deforestation that allows for palm oil plantations to be built leads to the orangutans, among other animals such as rhinos, tigers, elephants, and more, to be forced to leave their homes. And then, when they do not have food left as there is no forest for them to get food from, they go into the plantations looking for food. Usually, they are shot dead.

The amount of deforestation has lead to an increase in poaching and selling orangutans illegally on the black market as pets. The amount of orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra is ever decreasing. However, there is still hope. If we stop purchasing products with palm oil, these companies stop using palm oil, and we all raise awareness, we can save these apes, who are our close relatives.
