High school students at schools in NSW have been subjected to compulsory english from kindergarten through to year 12, however, english in year 11 and 12 should not be compulsory as is disadvantages students in other interest groups such a humanities and especially sciences. For example, if a student is studying all STEM subjects, then tell me why they need to be forced through the horrors that are HSC english. I have always thought, if english is compulsory, they why isn’t maths, or a science, i don’t see and E for english in the acronym STEM, only engineering. Not to mention, what you learn in HSC english is stupid as well, tell me what real life skills i am going to receive from finding parcipitals, similes, metaphors, hyperboles in a poem written 500 years ago, where as over in maths you learn about money, bills taxes, and in science you learn how to improve the world, for example, medicine, technology e.c.t..

The system is bias towards students who favour writing and thinking deeply about the humanity of the world, which has its place for sure, but i don’t think that every student should be A. forced to learn about it, and B. be dragged down by it. It is in my opinion a systematic failure.

If you think that you need english for writing in life, reports and whatnot, there are some changes that should be made, you should A. make the curriculum more relevant to everyday life, i do understand writing is important, and B. give students the choice of weather they want it to account to their ATAR

In conclusion, please sign this, out of all the people in my year, only 3-4 people actually enjoy the subject, and most other people are only doing it for the fact they have to.

I speak here on behalf of large amount of NSW’s student population
