Navneet Phull started this petition to NEMA - National Environment Management Authority (National Environment Management Authority) and

Request NEMA and the Governor of Nairobi, Mike Sonko to ban all fireworks in Nairobi. Nairobi is taking positive strides in environmental issues with the NEMA polythene bag ban as well as the Nairobi River rehabilitation initiative.

Fireworks have a number of negative repercussions to the environment, animals and people and we need to reconsider whether a short display of pretty lights falling from the sky is worth all the ill-effects they have.

Those of us who have pets have witnessed their behaviour change during fireworks. Pets don’t understand the cause for celebration and become startled by the noise.

The devastating and traumatizing effects of fireworks are also seen in wildlife. The wild animals in the vicinity, which depend on their highly sensitive hearing for communication and survival, experience permanent hearing impairments from the loud explosions. Birds and other nesting animals become distraught and flee their nests in a blind panic. Many birds fly into buildings and break their necks, while others become so disoriented that they are unable to relocate their nests, abandoning their young.

In addition to the immediate harm caused by fireworks, the environmental impacts linger for weeks. The smoke and chemicals that remain in the air long after the celebrations are over end up in rivers and lakes, causing physical harm to the animals in the area.

They also adversely effect children and people suffering from respiratory or anxiety issues, not to mention supporting industries with terrible safety laws for the workers who make them in dangerous working conditions overseas.

The current government regulation on the display of fireworks to only four hours - between 7pm and 11pm - and that these should be outside residential areas and held only in authorised venues such as clubs, hotels, school compounds, sports grounds, temples and other such venues, does NOT work. As majority of such venues are located in close proximity if not within residential areas.

We are asking for a ban of fireworks, or at the very least, a consideration for "silent" fireworks (although this does not eliminate the environmental or health damage).
