As most of you already know, Robert E. Lee HS has lost its name to a 7-0 vote from the NEISD board. A lot of people are upset and a lot of people are happy. Since the name will be changed, it should be symbolic to the nature of heroism. It may sound like a joke, but we should change to the name to Bruce Lee HS. Here's why:
We all know that he is considered by commentators, critics, media, and other martial artists to be one of the most influential martial artists of all time. But many don't know that when he was studying wing chun as a teenager, the other students found out that he was part caucasian. They didn't want him to learn the ways of their heratige. Later down the line after he moved back to the US, the Chinese found out he was teaching wing chun to non Chinese people. They sent over someone to shut him down. He was given the option to throw down or shut down. Of course, he chose to throw down and he ended up winning with in 3 minutes. He battled prejudice and influenced millions to believe that we are all one.
His martial arts were amazing, but what truly makes him so powerful was his philosophy. He read books upon books to gain the knowledge of what it is to be human. Some of his quotes influence the life we live today:
"Knowing is not enough, we must apply. Willing is not enough, we must do."
"Don't fear failure. — Not failure, but low aim, is the crime. In great attempts it is glorious even to fail."
"If you love life, don't waste time, for time is what life is made up of."
Growing up at Lee HS was quite the experience. The students that were there while I attended were very open and diverse. I never really liked being called a volunteer; I did enjoy the rebel name, but didn't know the true meaning until later in life.
Having Bruce Lee as the name of the school would vastly encourage many students to follow his ways. Many students will be proud to go to school every day knowing that it is named after a legend.
There is so much more to know about him. Watch "I Am Bruce Lee" and see for yourself.
On a fun note, we can still say Lee HS and mean something else haha.
