Jonathan Kaner started this petition to Zoning Adjustments Board, Berkeley CA ZAB Secretary at the Land Use Planning Division

A development of 6 large single family homes is underway on the lot at the corner of Grizzly Peak and Latham Lane. Construction has begun on one, 2 projects have been approved, and 3 will be up for approval before the Zoning Board on April 22. We have learned that the roof on the house at 1028 Grizzly Peak is intended to be the finished product. This large flat roof is covered in a bright white, highly reflective material that shines brightly in the sun. It stands out dramatically from the other natural forested colors of what is otherwise a lovely bay view, incorporating many homes that are not at all obtrusive. At least 7 homes sit above it, with glaring light markedly damaging their views. People walking on the street note it to be markedly out of place. The effect is not at all subtle, and is obvious to any observer.

City policies include provisions that developments be compatible with the character of the area, compatible with the desirable design characteristics of the area, not be detrimental to the comfort and welfare of the persons residing in the area, and not be detrimental or injurious to the adjacent properties. These are all violated by this roof.

We the undersigned will oppose approval of the remaining 3 construction permits unless the roofs on all 6 houses not be reflective white in color, but rather be non-reflective and of a color consistent with the character of our neighborhood.
