Throughout my college experience at University of Miami, I allowed my perfectionism get the best of me as I further pursued health and fitness. By restricting, monitoring, and obsessing over everything I ate, I spiraled myself into an eating disorder. However, with the help of my college campus, amazing therapists, and my own hard work, I have made huge steps toward recovery. I am now channeling my efforts toward supporting others who have been faced with similar problems through petitions such as this, and intend to open a gym focused on balanced lifestyle and body positivity after graduation.
The goal of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is to put the spotlight on eating disorders and improve public understanding of their causes, dangers and treatments. Millions of people across the country suffer from eating disorders, but by increasing awareness and access to resources, we can encourage early detection and intervention. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder, so raising awareness about early intervention can mean saving lives.
It is so important that we bring attention to this issue in Florida, so I hope that you will join our efforts by taking a stand to introduce a resolution to declare February 23 to March 1, 2019 as National Eating Disorders Awareness Week in Florida.
