Fairfield Avenue (CT Route 130), or 'The Ave' as it is commonly referred to, is a dangerous street for everyone who uses it, whether driving, walking, or biking. In addition to being the home to nearly all of the businesses and essential services in our community, it is the only way for residents of Black Rock to get to Fairfield, or Bridgeport.

The street currently acts as a barrier, dividing the community. If it was a safe road to cycle on, people would ride much more, reducing pollution, and increasing their physical activity levels, and greatly enhancing a sense of community.

The Ave needs bike lanes. The current cross-section encourages dangerous driving, risky overtaking, rewards speeding, and endangers all of our lives. The Ave needs reconfiguring now. A 3-lane cross section, with a center turn lane would create room for parking protected bike lanes.

Even though it is dangerous, hundreds of people (many with no alternative) ride their bikes along the Ave every day. Many residents would prefer to ride their bikes, but take their car instead, because of the dangerous conditions on the Ave.

Cyclists who do ride along the Ave currently have 2 unappealing choices:

  1. Legal and dangerous. Ride on the street, between parked cars, and moving traffic. Riding a few feet from parked cars means they are in the direct line of traffic. Riding closer to the parked cars reduces this risk, but encourages cars to pass closer, and increases the danger from opening drivers side doors. (Some riders chose to ride on the left hand side of the street which means they can see oncoming traffic, and are less likely to be seriously injured by a car door).
  2. Illegal but feels safer. Ride on the sidewalk. This creates a hazard for themselves - as drivers of turning vehicles don't expect cyclist to be there - and a hazard for people walking on the sidewalk and in and out of store fonts

Most pick option 2.

This is not ok.

We support a redesign of the street cross section that include parking protected bike lanes.
