Keni Jane Johnson started this petition to Director of NDOT Kyle Schneweis and

Someone shouldn't have to die before the state pays attention to this dangerous intersection. The stop signs currently located on Highway 66 where it meets Highway 6 traveling north and south have already proven to be insufficient at preventing accidents.

We want the NDOT to install a permanent traffic light there NOW. The underground wiring is already in place for a project of this magnitude and has been in place for over 10 years! This makes the “down time” half of what it would normally take for such an undertaking! The Ashland residents have been kept waiting for more than a decade as the state drags it's heels and dreams about its imaginary (not to mention costly) roundabout! (Look at south Lincoln for an example of those!) The State’s costly “dream” simply is NOT feasible in that location; unless of course the State wants to spend millions of dollars for additional road/dirt work in order to meet the existing highway... and BNSF might have something to say about that as well. Regardless, ALL of this should have been done years ago; when they diverted the original Highway 66 and created this monstrosity of an intersection!
The community of Ashland and daily commuters have been forced to deal with these unnecessary traffic headaches and hiccups that the state created when they made the decision to only install those 2 stop signs and call it good!!

Well, it's not good enough! As our little community continues to grow, so do the dangers. Not only do we deal with speeding rock trucks, stop sign violators, and seasonal sun glare, this section of highway 6 is basically the only alternate route for people traveling from Lincoln to Omaha/Omaha to Lincoln when the interstate closes and traffic is diverted. And don't forget the congestion it suffers on Husker home game days!!
The way this intersection was designed makes everything harder to maneuver. Left turns are a toss up. It ends up being a guessing game as to whose turn it is. Our community shouldn't be forced to play "frogger" and "shoot the gap" during our daily travels.
There is a traffic light at Highway 6 and 84th street in Lincoln and that is only a T intersection. There is also one on your way through Waverly. Neither of these intersections are located at a juncture for TWO HIGHWAYS.
The purpose of a traffic light is to aid in the flow of traffic and to PREVENT accidents from occurring.
Please sign this petition so we can let the NDOT, the Director of the NDOT, Kyle Schneweis, and our Governor, Pete Ricketts, know that our lives and the lives of our children shouldn't hinge on the placement of a stop light! Driving from point A to point B should never equate a life.... especially when there is a simple solution.
Food for thought .... the NDOT says one or more fatalities must occur before they'll address the issue.
Short version, MORE THAN ONE person has to die before the state will do anything.
This is NOT acceptable!!
By signing this petition let’s show them that the community of Ashland chooses SAFETY before sacrifice! Even ONE death is unacceptable; when it’s preventable!!
