NCDOT: No Highway through Matthews, NC

We feel a 4-lane highway is inappropriate for our community's character and the needs of its citizens and visitors.
According to NCDOT's reports, a 4-lane design for John Street will host 54,500 cars through Matthews daily, this is an additional 32,000 cars traveling through a largely residential corridor per day.
We suggest NCDOT finish other funded projects, like the parallel improvements on 74, widening of 485, an additional ramp to 485 from Weddington Road, while the town improve and connect sidewalks along the corridor. Once these improvements are complete and John Street needs can be assessed an appropriate design should be considered.
The 4-lane design would encourage higher speeds, invite an 140% increase in traffic, create a large divide separating neighborhoods from downtown businesses, and create gridlock congestion at the main intersection with Trade Street.
We agree that improved traffic flow is an important priority, but one that must be balanced with the character of our small town.
