Why this petition matters

Started by Seth Duncan

Many Education Majors at North Carolina Central University have been greatly impacted by decisions that were made to “support” students in passing State Licensure exams. This decision has created a class to support students who have not passed before the required deadline. Students are now being dropped immediately from classes that indicated their halfway point completion of the program. The class EDU 2900, was not offered nor suggested to students in the education department before these recent issues. The administration has emphasized the importance of passing these exams but, why wasn’t this class offered to students before this coming fall? Most students who were impacted by this decision have been working extremely hard to pass classes, maintain financial obligations, and balance the rigorous workload. The department has offered study sessions and the administration has stated that “the content discussed in your classes should help with the tests” but that is not the case for the majority of their student. This decision prevents students who have shown GREAT excellence in the Education Department from graduating on time and more financial strain on their current student loans and financial obligations. I am writing this petition to the administration that is serving in their current positions in the education department to allow students to take these tests while completing student teaching or at the completion of graduation. This will give students the time to graduate on time and complete the institutional required mandates for passing licensure exams. The need for educators is heavy right now, and this is hindering great educators from getting in the classroom!  I hope that changes are made for this upcoming student year and that this will get the attention of the Department of Education at North Carolina Central University.
