Per ESPN The coronavirus outbreak put an end to the NCAA men's basketball tournament before it could begin, prompting state Sen. Joe Gruters to introduce a resolution Thursday proclaiming the Noles "champions by default.

As such, I propose the University of Maryland men's and women's basketball teams be made NCAA National Champions. According to Sagarin Ratings and ESPN’s BPI updates, only three of the nation’s 33 Division I conferences had teams that earned double-digit "Quality Wins," a short list of only 10 of 353 teams overall.

The Big Ten featured 7 of those; the Big 12 had 2; and the Big East had 1. "Quality wins" is defined as number of wins against Top 50 opponents.

Coach Turgeon and the Terps produced a competitive team that earned national recognition all season, including a share of their first Big Ten Championship. And this list demonstrates the quality of Big Ten Conference members across the NCAA landscape as such, the University of Maryland men's basketball team should be proclaimed as the NCAA's best.

Maryland Women's coach Brenda Frese, whose 28-4 Terps had won 17 games in a row, said this team reminded her of her 2006 NCAA championship squad: a bit under the radar but peaking at the perfect time. South Carolina, Oregon, Maryland and UConn were able to end this season by winning conference tournament championships. As such there should be four teams listed as 2019-2020 women's champions as they hold the major conference regular season and tournament crowns
