In writing this statement I would simply like to ask everyone who reads this to keep an open mind and heart as the Terry family explains and gives insight on a series of events that took place 26 years ago which lead to the incarceration of Ervin Louis Terry Jr.
We don’t suggest or recommend that anyone be involved in any type of violence whether its domestic, gun, or physical violence however; on August 23,1991 things took a turn for the worse and the Terry family’s life was completely changed when an act of self-defense caused a young African American male to be sentenced to life in prison.
Please take a moment to put yourself in the shoes of Ervin Terry Jr. as to where your life is at stake and you have to make a sudden decision that could either cost you your life or others that are potentially involved. All while fathering an 11 month old baby girl and striving to become a better man the series of events that took place that day unfortunately resulted in the life of the aggressor being taken to save his own.
On March 24th, 1992 Ervin Louis Terry was sentenced to life in prison where he was charged with first degree murder as an act of protecting his own life. Though the events that led to this decision were tragic and traumatizing for both families that were involved it also presented itself with an opportunity to build a better man. After spending two decades in prison Ervin Louis Terry Jr. was eligible for consideration of parole on August 2014. Although the acts of crimes that were committed on that day resulted in Ervin being placed in prison he did present itself with a positive outcome. One was salvation through Jesus Christ. We all have made mistakes and have done things that have altered of affected our lives as well as other however we were given a second chance.
Ervin Terry has since then had a major turnaround while being incarcerated with earning several certifications with programs such as Project Nehemiah phases one and two which deals with successfully confronting challenges in any environment all while maintaining perfect attendance. He also earned certification as a facility technician with Halifax Community College, certifications through Wake Tech Community College & Roanoke-Chowan Community College just to name a few.
In writing this statement we do realize that we can’t change the past and let alone tell anyone how to feel we just simply request that you put yourself in our shoes. Ervin Terry has been in jail for over 26 years all while missing his baby girl grow up, graduate and start a family of her own simply because he may an abrupt decision to protect his own life. All while being incarcerated he has never been in any sort of trouble and has always kept a reputation as a man of good character. Ask yourself what would have done in his situation where your life is being threatened and you only have a split second to make a decision.
Everyone deserves a second chance and we pray that find it in your heart to sign this petition to help a man who has served two decades in prison have and another chance at a life of freedom as he prepares to go before the commissioners of parole on the near future.
