Why this petition matters

Started by Amy Odom

The women inmates'  at the North Carolina Correctional Institute for Women (NCCIW) in Raleigh, NC are suffering cruel and unusual punishment, a violation of the Constitution's Eighth Amendment due to the lack of air conditioning there. How bad is it? A service program stopped bringing its dogs to live and learn there with the women. Here is an article from the New & Observer, Sept. 2019  with details https://www.newsobserver.com/opinion/article234994977.html

The lack of air conditioning in Southern prisons creates unsafe—even lethal—conditions. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can cause dehydration and heat stroke, both of which can be fatal. It can also affect people’s kidneys, liver, heart, brain, and lungs, which can lead to renal failure, heart attack, and stroke. https://www.prisonpolicy.org/blog/2019/06/18/air-conditioning/

My white privilege has allowed me to volunteer at NCCIW since 2017 and I have witnessed first hand the appalling conditions of this antiquated complex built in 1938. Thoughts and prayers are no longer enough. Please sign this petition to demand emergency relief to these women now.
