Create a 24 hour "Hate Crime" Hotline for the State of NC & the City of Charlotte

This petition had 355 supporters

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, there have been more than 900 reported hate crimes since the November 8, 2016 Presidential election. In the state of North Carolina, an alarming FBI report showed a disturbing 15% increase in hate crimes from 2014 to 2015. According to a report by WCNC Charlotte, “minority groups and the LGBTQ community saw the worst incline.”

Victims of hate crimes are being attacked and harassed because of their gender, race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, immigration status and disabilities. Many states like New York, Maryland, and Massachusetts have all taken action to protect their residents and citizens from the recent spike in bias motivated criminal activity and harassment. For example, Massachusetts State Attorney General Maura Healey launched a 24 hour "Hate Crime" hotline for her state's residents in less than a week. Governor Cuomo of New York has also launched a 24 hour "Hate Crime" hotline and has created a special police unit to investigate the uptick in hate crimes.

Therefore, Charlotte Against Hate and the concerned citizens and residents of North Carolina are respectfully requesting that our Governor Roy Cooper, NC Attorney General Josh Stein, Mayor of Charlotte Jennifer Roberts, Charlotte City Manager Marcus D. Jones, Charlotte Mayor Pro Tem Vi Lyles, NC Senator Jeff Jackson and Charlotte City Councilwoman Julie Eiselt follow the states mentioned above and implement measures to protect North Carolina residents and visitors from hate crimes. More specifically, we are requesting that the above mentioned immediately implement a 24 hour "Hate Crime" hotline for residents to discuss and report hate crimes and other bias-motivated criminal activity and harassment.
