Cant refer to someone as a monster who cannot help he is mentally ill. He did not ask God to be born this way

The media has such a distorted view on things like Mental Health. It seems like everyone "knows" everything there is to know about people will mental illnesses...regardless of the specific diagnosis....stigma has made it believable that we are all the same!

This monster used self-diagnosed "mental illness" as an excuse for his atrocious behavior. NBC news enforced this slander against those with mental illness, who are far more likely to be victims of violent crime than perpetrators when compared to those without mental illness. Williams just took us a big step backward in our efforts for public understanding, and he reinforced nationally the stigma against us, which we have fought for decades. NBC should do a documentary on the large percent of the mentally ill, who go about their days just as the rest of healthy society does.

Because my daughter has anxiety disorter, panic disorder, ptsd, social phobia, and OCD. Plus I have OCD. We are every day normal people. I am a 54 year old, disabled woman and my daughter is a 22 year old woman afraid to live a normal life because my husband left me after 19 years of marriage and he just left, no goodbyes or anything. He just was there one day and gone the next. There is no face to mental illness.

I teach social work, and misinformed, biased news reporting adds to the prejudice that ends in lack of voter support for mental health funding.

I am not a monster but I am also a face of mental illness.

Does Brian Williams really know "the face of mental illness?" Shame on him and shame on NBC if they allow this type of speech to continue. My daughter SUFFERS from a mental illness, and when I say suffer that is not in any way an exaggeration. She faces stigma every day and the careless remarks that Mr. Williams made just adds to the stigma. I ask that NBC and Mr. Williams to really take a look at "the face of mental illness." It may surprise you to find that is very close to you--your neighbors, your colleagues and even your own family."

While Ariel Castro may be mentally ill he is not the face of mental illness. Mental illness is not a stereotype, it is an illness.
