I am revolting against professional sports leagues strict regulations on marijuana products. I believe professional athletes should be able to utilize cannabis products in order for them to help recover from their demanding athletic games. Ironically, since I started my revolt the MLB (Major League Baseball) has changed its policy on marijuana. They recently announced that they won’t test their players for cannabis products and the NHL fully legalized weed in their league. This allows athletes in the MLB and NHL to use marijuana products this upcoming season, a policy the NBA or the NFL have failed to consider. The overarching reason why these athletes should be able to utilize these products is that they provide numerous health benefits needed in their recovery process. For instance, Cannabis has been proven to treat chronic pain, improve lung capacity, treat depression and prevent muscle spasms, all essential components for an athlete. Cannabis also has other general health benefits including; regulating seizures, strengthening/healing bones, improving arthritis tolerance, and many more. In fact, due to these health benefits 11 states in the United States have fully legalized the use of cannabis and 29 other states including the District of Columbia have legalized some forms of medical marijuana. Since athletes could legally use this product medically in the majority of locations; out of the 4 major sports leagues (NBA, NFL, MLB, & NHL) 101/123 are located in areas where individuals can legally use weed medicinally  and this figure only looks to grow as legalization becomes more prevalent. (Axios) On top of this, in a census of citizens in the United States an overwhelming 81% belief medical marijuana should be legalized, so most people would agree that it would be unjust to prevent professional athletes access to a product that can only benefit their health and the general community is allowed to use. A counter-argument would be that the marijuana would be used as a performance enhancing drug which it is actually not. According to the US National Library of Medicine, “there is no direct performance enhancing effects of marijuana in athletes.” If there are many health benefits for athletes, increasing legalization, and other professional sports leagues such as the NHL and MLB have changed regulations to allow marijuana products then why shouldn’t the NFL or NBA.
