Informal caregivers can provide upwards of an average of 20 hours a week of intense caregiving each week. The responsibilities informal caregivers take on range from supporting the recipient's independence, through assisting with daily activities, all the way to assisting with bathing, medications, and feeding. There is no doubt that informal caregiving disrupts the caregivers' normal work routine; through means of having to adjust their work hours, take time off, or having to leave the workforce. As a result, caregivers experience a major financial strain. The out of pocket costs experienced by caregivers is nearly $5 500.
Informal caregivers deserve better financial and workplace support. To make this happen, the federal government ought to invest more into their current programs. At this moment. the current programs do not adequately support the challenges and burdens of all the informal caregivers. Not to mention, a workplace protection program ought to be improved upon.
I believe the need to have better support for the caregivers is necessary. Change must happen to improve the quality of life of informal caregivers.
