Rachel Kelley, MSN, RN started this petition to Natives and

Eliminate use of Redskins and natives as Union Public School’s mascot.  Natives are not mascots!  The board has created a committee to evaluate the district’s use of “Redskins” as the mascot.  The board has not revisited this topic for 17 years and 17 years ago it was determined that the name would be kept.  Union Public Schools has used “Redskins” since 1945 and continues to capitalize on this “long standing history” as a justification to continue the racism.  Please help end this corruption within one of our independent local school systems.  Show your support to all natives, indigenous, First Nations, and anyone of color that District 7 supports all races and nationalities.  Help eliminate systemic racism at it’s core, beginning with the local school system.

Controversy surrounds this topic but it is 2020 and now is the time for change.  You would never see racial slurs used in the same manner for blacks, Hispanics, Asians etc., and for obvious reasons: they are vile and extremely offensive.  If it is determined, by anyone other than natives/indigenous people themselves, then it is oppressive!  Why then, is it still acceptable, for a large, independent district residing within District 7 of Tulsa County, Oklahoma still using Redskins as their school mascot? Would anyone ever tolerate a depiction of a black male, with the words “Union ******’s” or an Asian male with the words “Union *****’s” or a Hispanic male with the words “Union *******’s” (insert racist language for *).  Are you offended now at the mere suggestion?  Yes? Good, we are getting somewhere!  The point is, across North America (the United States, Canada, and Mexico), native people aka indigenous aka First Nation’s say “Native’s are not your mascots”.  They are not wrong!

Furthermore, it is important to know that the mascot committee is comprised of “35 people which includes student and parent representation, Native American representatives, alumni, etc…and includes TWO tribal representatives from the Creek and Cherokee tribes participating but they are in a non-voting capacity, and two board members who sit on the committee but are non-voting”.  TWO natives are given a non-voting seat at the table that decides their fate on whether or not there will continue to be a use of “Redskins”…. The similarities that got “us” into this situation to begin with are unnerving.

Please sign and share this petition to show your support to the mascot committee of Union Public Schools in hopes that they will vote to redact the use of “Union Redskins” and use of a native male as the school’s mascot.  We are hoping to turn in a petition with thousands of signatures, and show the two natives at the table that they and all native people are loved, supported, and welcomed within District 7 of Tulsa, Oklahoma, including it’s school systems.  Will you help?
