Did you that only 31% of plastic is recycled in Ireland? The remainder of this plastic ends up polluting seas and our natural environment, proving life threatening to animals. The production of plastic for items we use daily releases toxic chemicals which cause cancer and pollute the air and soil. We consume micro plastics from food we eat, such as fish and animals who have previously consumed plastic in their lifetime.

There are two large sources of plastic on campus in NUIG, one coming from the science labs, where tremendous amounts of plastic equipment are used every day and disposed of, and the contract they settled (and very recently renewed) with Coca-Cola and RiverRock, meaning every bottle of soft-drink and water sold on campus is made of plastic. Coca Cola is ranked worst in the world when it comes producing the most plastic waste, we do not wish to be part of this. All fresh food on campus is packaged in single use plastic which creates a huge amount of plastic waste each day. All this waste is unnecessary as lab equipment and plastic bottles can be replaced with materials such as glass and metal, which are recyclable, and food can be packaged in a biodegradable or paper bags.

Did you know that NUIG have created a strategy to reduce single use plastics by 2021? Yet we are near the end of 2020 and have not seen any plans made to reach this goal. We want to be sure that they follow through with this plan. We propose the following to reduce our Campus footprint:

•   We want to end the contract that NUIG has signed with Coca Cola and its branches.

•   We want to introduce more compost bins, water fountains and wash stations for bottles on campus.

•   We want to ban single use plastic across the university, such as single use coffee cups, plastic cutlery, plastic bottles, plastic straws and plastic packaging on fresh food.

•   We want to ban single use plastic lab equipment and replace it with a more sustainable material that can either be reused or recycled.

Please sign this petition to help us, the Environmental Society NUI Galway, make the campus become a greener, more sustainable environment. One person can make the biggest difference!
