NSS Insurance should be OPTIONAL not compulsory

The National Service Scheme in partnership with Glico Life Insurance, and MTN has launched a life insurance cover, pending implementation for national service personnel.
This “compulsory” life insurance package is expected to pay claims to service personnel who are victims of accidents in their line of duty. The claims vary from GH₵ 3000 and GH₵ 15, 000, in cases of temporary disability and cases of death or incapacitation respectively. Personnel are also entitled to GH₵ 500 loan, payable within six months. Other benefits for the over 90,000 personnel include free text messages and phone calls among MTN users.
National Service Personnel would, therefore, be subjected to GH₵ 15 monthly insurance deductions.
In as much as the idea is laudable, it should be made OPTIONAL since some personnel might have life insurance policy and would render this compulsory insurance redundant. If the insurance cannot be made optional, we would like the possibility to reclaim our contributions if we do not make any claims during the one-year period.
