Something more than thoughts and prayers need to be done about these tragedies. Nothing has been done since Sandy Hook in 2012. Mass shootings are detrimental to our slogan, ¨The land of the free¨. How can we truly be free if we live in fear? How can we truly be free if we are not free to do everyday things without feeling safe? We are no longer safe in public places. It cannot be true that we value our guns over our children - our future. Our goal is to not only bring awareness to the situation, but we want to ultimately bring change amongst our community. It is a common thing to say gun control won't solve anything, but numbers do not lie. America's gun homicide rate is 25 times higher than other high income countries according to https://www.amjmed.com/article/S0002-9343(15)01030-X/fulltext. There have been 366 mass shootings in the United States: https://www.businessinsider.com/number-of-mass-shootings-in-america-this-year-2019-8. After a 1996 shooting in Australia, their government bought guns back from their civilians and gun death totals were nearly cut in half over the following years. This link shows more countries that have benefited greatly due to gun control laws: https://www.businessinsider.com/gun-deaths-nearly-eliminated-in-countries-what-us-can-learn-2017-11. With this information, we hope to spark change in our community. Please help us advocate for gun control laws in our community.
