Ava W. started this petition to National History Day

On National History Day, students from all over the world compete with historical presentations. These presentations can be done individually or in groups of up to three. The purpose of the competition is to provide students in 6th-12th grade with an opportunity to learn how to present their research. There are several rounds in the competition, and the winner can win a scholarship. The grade that the students' schools give them for this is 50% of their semester grade, therefore this project is taken very seriously. The presentation can be either a website, paper, poster, documentary, or skit, designed so that students can choose to work in their strengths for this very important test grade and competition. Unfortunately, historical fiction, while regulated in the NHD rule book, is not recognized by the NHD organization because they have neglected to read the rule book. This has cost many students at my school and around the world their chance to compete in the NHD competition, and in some cases, to win a scholarship, regardless of how well put-together their historical fiction is. When I heard about this, I wondered why things were this way. My history teacher says this is just how it's always been, but I refuse to accept that my friends and I cannot write historical fiction for this very important grade and competition just because NHD is too lazy to read the rule book. For this reason, I ask you to sign this petition and bring to NHD's attention that historical fiction is indeed allowed to compete, and ignorance will not be tolerated. By signing this petition you are acknowledging that historical fiction is indeed a recognized form of NHD presentations and vouching for their permittance in NHD competitions.
