It's clear that NHS staff have had their most challenging year ever. Self care and self expression are vital in maintaining employees wellbeing however many staff members in trusts across the country are being discriminated against and having their professionalism questioned due to irrelevant factors such as the colour of their hair or tattoos they have. Why in the 21st century are we allowing a place of work dictate personal choices that have no impact on an individual's ability to do their job. Many NHS Trust uniform policies include lines such as 'hair must not be brightly coloured' and 'tattoos should not be visible.' In 2018 a Midwife was placed on unpaid leave until she dyed her hair from bright red back to a natural colour. During this time the trust which was already understaffed chose to prioritise this outdated and unreasonable policy over the wellbeing of patients and staff by leaving the antenatal clinic a midwife short. This midwife should never have been placed in this position. I believe that these outdated views should be removed from NHS policies in order to allow staff freedom of expression.
