Problem to be solved- No reward for defense in the high school game. With a shot clock, which is why the shot clock was invented was to reward great defense. I’ve watched game after game this season (2022) and the last few seasons, where coaches are using this no shot clock formula and taking advantage of it by holding the ball far to long. This also is killing the game and making it not enjoyable to watch at this level anymore as coaches increasingly go to exploit the no shot clock option (of course use it to your advantage, but it’s not enjoyable) . With so many games this year, I’ve seen excellent defense, where the teams crowd gets behind the great defense, only to get scored on after 60-80 seconds. The shot clock will help alleviate these issues, pending of course you get the defensive rebound. KEEP IN MIND- it’s not so much people are anti shot clock, they are anti change. However I feel this will be a great change for high school basketball. I’ve talked to many who agree a shot clock is needed.  Now this is not necessarily going to speed the game up, Virginia a good example, however it will reward the defense better, which is why the shot clock was invented. One last note- many coaches who were against it, after being implemented realized they now love it and it wasn’t as bad as thought.
