Petition for opening of tattoo studios during lock down stage 3

We, the undersigned tattoo studio owners and employees put forward the following request to the National Covid-19 Command Council for South Africa:

Due to the fact that tattoo studios already adhere to the most stringent sanitation and health and safety regulations during the best of times we implore you to consider providing us with an exemption to trade during lockdown stage 3 or include us in the permitted professional services.

All tattoo artists are required to completely sanitize the workplace before and between each client and gloves are worn at all times during procedures. All staff are also certified in the prevention of transmission of blood borne pathogens and their certificates to confirm this are available at all times. The studios already implement the strictest sanitation measures at all times including cleaning all surfaces and equipment with industrial grade cleaning products in line with WHO regulations. We will during this time also enforce further measures to ensure the safety of our staff and clients by:

- Including the wearing of masks as a requirement at all times while on the premises which includes our clients who will be provided with masks should they arrive without masks or with masks that are inferior to the ones provided by us.

- Using a contactless thermal scanner to check for high temperatures on all staff and clients before allowing them on the premises.

- Doing daily health screenings for all other COVID-19 related symptoms on all our staff.

Additionally the studios do not accept walk in patrons and all consultations and sessions are by appointment only. Studios are well ventilated as well to insure that the air is kept fresh at all times.

Artists will only come into the studio to do consultations that require direct interaction with the clients or to apply tattoos/piercings and will endeavor to do their utmost to complete the majority of their consultations from home over social media, Whatsapp or video calling.

All disposable items used during the performance of our duties are discarded in medical waste bins which are collected regularly by a medical waste disposal company.

Tattoo artists do not have any other means of making an income and our trade requires that we interact with our clients in order to perform our duties.
