Violence against women and girls is a grave violation of human rights. It is any act of gender-based violence which results in physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering to women. Violence manifests itself in various forms - sexual assaults such as rape and molestation, female foeticide and infanticide, unequal access to food, shelter, clothing, education and health facilities, child marriage, domestic violence, marital rape, sexual harassment at work place, forced abortion, forced pregnancy, forced prostitution, trafficking of women, torture of widows and many more. According to the United Nations, at least one out of every three women around the world has been beaten, coerced into sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime with the abuser usually someone known to her. A psychological set back and trauma because of domestic violence affects women’s productivity in all forms of life. It negatively affects women’s general well-being. All women from all over the world have the right to be respected and be treated as they should. We cannot let the perpetrators go unpunished. We need Standard procedures for addressing violence against women and also prompt and strict judicial actions. Also the notion of horror and humiliation must be eradicated that punishes victims who have already suffered crime and now face stigma. It is the culprit who should feel disgraced, not the victims. Violence against women and girls occurs in every society around the world. It is important that support is available for them, justice is provided and that this abuse is challenged. Let's make this world a better place for women and that can only be done by enforcement of stringent laws for the protection of their rights and by building a society together which truly rejects any kind of violence against women and girls.
